What is birth control?

Birth control, also known as contraception, is any method that can prevent pregnancy from occuring.

Today, women have many birth control options available to them. The best option for you depends on your personal preferences, general health, lifestyle, and other factors.

At New Leaf Adult & Women’s Health NP, PLLC, Enjoli can provide the necessary education you’ll need to know about the different options so you can feel confident in your decision.

What are some types of birth control?

Birth control pills

There are many different types of birth control pills. While some may only contain either estrogen or progestin, others might have progestin and estrogen combined. Depending on the type of pill you choose, it can either prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation or thicken your cervical mucus to stop sperm from entering your womb.

You’ll need to take the pill at the same time every day. If you miss a pill or have other medicines in your daily regimen that can interfere with the pill’s effectiveness, you might need additional forms of birth control.

Birth control implants

Implants are about the size of a matchstick. These devices are placed under the skin near your inner bicep. A birth control implant gradually releases hormones that either prevent ovulation or thicken your cervical mucus. This type of birth control is effective for up to three years.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs)

Getting an IUD is a popular form of birth control because it doesn’t require you to remember to use it. IUDs are small, T-shaped devices that slip into the uterus through the cervix. A long, plastic tail of strings extends into the vaginal canal.

The device remains in place for three to five, up to ten years before being replaced with a new IUD.

Barrier methods

Barrier methods physically block sperm from reaching an egg.

These methods may include male condoms, diaphragms, female condoms, sponges, and spermicidal foam.

There are also birth control patches, injections, and vaginal rings.
