What is STD testing?

An STD, or sexually transmitted disease, test is a diagnostic procedure to determine whether you have an STD present.

STDs can vary in severity, depending on the type of STD you have. However, many types of STDs can affect your health, causing issues like infertility and other symptoms. The sooner you receive a test, the better you can treat your condition.

Many STDs can lead to irreversible damage and long-term consequences, so it’s important to seek early testing and treatment.

Why should I have STD testing?

STD testing can help prevent the risk of other health problems and ensure you’re in good overall health, especially if you’ve had unprotected sex or you’re currently sexually active.

If an STD is not tested, serious conditions like syphilis or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may lead to devastating consequences for both you and your partner.

What are some common STDs?

Some common types of STDs include:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Syphilis
  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Herpes
  • Hepatitis B and C

These are just some of the common STDs, but there are many more. If you have HIV, the condition can progress and impact your body’s ability to fight off the infection.

With HIV, there is no cure. However, with STD testing and treatment, it doesn’t have to impact your ability to live a happy life.

Who should be tested for STDs?

You may need an STD test especially if you fall into one of the categories:

  • You’re a sexually active woman under age 25
  • You’re a sexually active woman over age 25

At New Leaf Adult & Women’s Health NP, PLLC, Enjoli can help you decide whether STD testing is right for you.

How often should I have STD testing?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), STD testing is recommended using specific guidelines and age criteria:

  • Anyone age 13-64 should be tested for HIV at least once
  • Sexually actively women under age 25 should be tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea every year
  • Pregnant women should be tested early in their pregnancy for Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and HIV

Enjoli can also recommend a STD testing schedule to meet your sexual habits and lifestyle.
